On the Hook follows Emily - a driven, magnetic college freshman, still reeling from the recent death of her mother. Emily discovers her best friend Mia in desperate crises after a miscarriage they fear will be investigated as an abortion. With the clock ticking and nowhere safe to turn in Texas, the two friends—along with Mia’s influencer roommate Jess — make a snap decision, they will cross state lines in an illegal and dangerous mission and drive to a clinic in New Mexico to save Mia’s life.
Over 24 hours, what begins as an urgent rescue becomes a transformative journey, and the stakes are just as personal as they are political. At first unknown to them, the girls are pursued by Kane, a corrupt police officer whose real motive is protecting his son from being implicated in helping Mia.
And as Mia’s condition worsens and obstacles mount, Emily’s forced to recruit her estranged Mormon aunt Annette, who like them, is also hiding something.
Now 3 becomes 4 on the desert roads to New Mexico — with Emily leading the way, determined not to lose another person she loves.
Filmmakers’ Statement: ON THE HOOK is filled with heart and humor. The journey these women take in the film isn’t just physical; it’s emotional and moral, as they navigate impossible choices, broken systems, and personal grief while holding on to each other. The story honors that struggle with urgency and a fierce belief in the power of people - especially young women - to fight back.
