Broken Badge is an investigative podcast and impact campaign focused on officer-involved domestic violence.
At the center of the project is the story of Deputy Abigail “Abby” Bieber, who was killed by her boyfriend, Detective Daniel Leyden. Both were members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
But Broken Badge is about more than one case.
Through reporting, survivor voices, law-enforcement perspectives, research and expert insight, the project examines how officer-involved domestic violence can be better recognized, prevented and addressed.
Your support helps us continue the work beyond the podcast — expanding public awareness, sharing credible research and resources, supporting education and prevention efforts, and helping strengthen the tools available to law-enforcement officers, families and communities.
A particular focus of Action for Abby is helping renew and expand attention, access and support for proven officer-involved domestic violence training, including the work developed through Florida State University’s National Prevention Toolkit on Officer-Involved Domestic Violence.
The Toolkit was created to educate officers, support officer and family wellness, encourage early help-seeking and give agencies practical prevention tools. Our goal is to help make sure work like this reaches more officers, departments and families — and has the support needed to grow again.
The goal is simple: honor Deputy Bieber’s life by helping prevent another family from experiencing the same loss.
Thank you.
