To amplify the success of purpose-driven films, we're launching a series of crowdfunding rallies for Creative Distribution, focused on films in critical issue areas or genres — Women-led, LGBTQ+, Comedy, Climate, Democracy (these are just some examples)). The rallies incentivize film/series teams to design and fund distribution strategies with greater narrative impact, while strengthening the sustainability of the teams behind them.
What is a crowdfunding rally?
A Seed&Spark crowdfunding rally is a large-scale, gently competitive (mostly cooperative) community-building event — multiple projects launching simultaneously around a shared theme, amplifying each other's audiences and building momentum no single campaign could generate alone. It multiplies the impact of resources: a prize, mentorship, and services that would normally go to one project instead attract dozens to greenlight themselves. There are no losers — worst case, you've raised money, built an audience, and developed a distribution strategy you control.
HOW THE CREATIVE DISTRIBUTION RALLY SERIES WORKS
Each issue area/genre becomes its own discrete rally with amplification partners from the Solidarity House network and beyond. We'll draw on existing relationships with fiscal sponsors who may become core to the effort. Curiosity Capital's Labs division will help build audience research, advancing the social science of how narrative systems move people. Our distribution partners will, where possible, create themes and channels for the films.
During each rally's call-for-submissions period, we'll offer workshops for creators on building effective distribution strategies, plus workshops and educational materials for funders on why distribution funding matters. We'll leverage the collective footprint of all partner platforms — YouTube, social channels, Substacks — to build a groundswell of materials. Films from each rally become additional case studies for the Distribution Playbook and beyond.
But we point this at audiences, too. Throughout the year, we leverage the conversation about creative distribution to also rally audiences (starting with filmmakers themselves) to either abandon their Netflix subscription or spend an equivalent amount to support platforms that support creators (examples: Kinema, Watermelon+, OTV). We set a lofty but achievable goal of 100,000 new subscribers/viewers across these platforms. That could be an actually game-changing shift for all of these platforms to be sustainable or grow substantially. We partner with the platforms we are supporting to help cross-promote this broad reaching effort at sustainability across the ecosystem. We work with specific distributors to uplift indie films using these platforms for creative distro. We don’t stop with streaming platforms - we include Arthouse Convergence theaters and festivals as well, driving people to see amazing indie films in arthouse theaters. It’s a 360 degree campaign for creative distribution.
THE ASK
We are raising $200,000 to fund the rally prizes and necessary infrastructure to service this campaign, as well as to bring aboard a Community Producer who can coordinate across the several dozen orgs.
We will commit to 4 crowdfunding rallies over 12–14 months, each building on the last. Prize package per rally: $25,000 + mentorship + distribution services, with partnerships tailored to each rally's issue area. We would also partner with festivals or theaters who would like to be part of grand-prize winning distribution strategy to also remind people that most of them have a great indie theater nearby!
We declare 2027 The Year of Creative Distribution.
Goals
1. Accelerate the rate at which independent films in these issue areas design distribution campaigns and raise the budgets to execute them
2. Engage and educate funders on the importance of funding distribution strategy alongside production
3. Incentivize and resource filmmakers to design and execute strong community distribution strategies
4. Leverage crowdfunding momentum to accelerate distribution success
5. Democratize access to distribution funding
6. Gather a critical mass of audiences to the new platforms providing better monetization and transparency to filmmakers - creating more stable infrastructure in the wake of this initiative.
