Your donation will help Maria Gabriela go back to Colombia and Venezuela this fall to film with Idania and the rest of our film participants.
We're aiming to raise between $10,000 and $12,000 to make this trip possible. Roundtrip travel alone runs between $1,400 and $1,700, and the cost of one shoot day with local film crews can fluctuate between $1,200 and $2,000, depending on the size of the crew needed. Some scenes call for a minimal, unobtrusive setup, while others require a larger team to capture the scope and complexity of the story.

Maria Gabriela Torres' directorial debut follows exiled Venezuelan journalist Idania Chirinos, as she grapples with the implications of the changes in her country's political landscape after the US military operation that captured dictator Nicolás Maduro in early 2026.
Chirinos has dedicated the last 13 years of her life, the time she's been living in exile, to rebuilding a life in Colombia, where she has given a platform to her fellow countrymen to advocate for democracy and the liberation of political prisoners.
The film's aim is to shift how Venezuela's political and social landscape is understood, replacing reductive headlines about invasion, oil, and sovereignty with the human stakes behind them: freedom of the press, political imprisonment, and displacement.
