Why is Or Harim raising funds?

For several years, Or Harim has been gathering people together through meaningful song, ritual, and potluck celebrations in Appalachia. We're asking for your collective buy-in to strengthen Or Harim's infrastructure and ensure that our work can continue for years to come. Your tax-deductible contributions will help us hire an administrator to handle our operations and communications, as well as support our ritual leaders and musicians to focus on what we do best and be well-compensated for our time. If there is enough funding, we will also look for a consistent space to rent. (And if you know of an accessible location with indoor and outdoor areas that you think would suit our community, please let us know!)

What is Or Harim planning to offer this year?

Starting after High Holidays, we'll offer a minimum of two events per month. We'll have a monthly Shabbat gathering that's free for members and $18 for non-members, and a second offering with tiered rates for members and non-members that will rotate leadership (upcoming examples include nigun singing circles, challah cover weaving workshops, and guided somatic practices). We will also continue offering our holiday events with tiered rates. If you are interested in offering a workshop or event co-sponsored by Or Harim, please be in touch.

Will Or Harim launch a religious school for young people? Will we get a Torah? Can we do life-cycle rituals together?

While we love these long-term visions, we're going to start by strengthening the work that is already in our wheelhouse. For the next year at least, we'll focus on building organizational infrastructure and offering nourishing, consistent community events for and with you all. If membership and funding grow significantly enough over the coming years that we can hire youth educators, buy a Torah, and start facilitating lifecycle rituals, we would love to do that and more.
