Frames of Freedom went over budget and needs your support. The film is complete but we need funds to pay for archive footage, one more week of editing, and funds to start the impact tour.
Frames of Freedom is a poignant documentary that follows six key individuals: co-founders Cori Thomas and Rahsaan “New York” Thomas; filmmaker D’Angelo “D’Lo” Louis; writer and artist James “JJ88” Jacobs; filmmaker Bernard “Raheem” Ballard, who was incarcerated during filming but has since been released; and incarcerated filmmaker Louis Sāle, as they come together around the creation of the first-ever film festival inside a U.S. state prison.
While the festival serves as the central throughline, the film interweaves each participant’s personal journey, charting their path to filmmaking, the challenges they’ve faced, and how those journeys ultimately intersect behind the walls of San Quentin. Frames of Freedom is a story about transformation, community, and reclaiming narrative power. It explores how filmmaking becomes a tool for redemption and self-expression, while revealing the emotional and logistical hurdles of organizing a cultural event in one of America’s most notorious prisons.
Frames of Freedom is directed by D'Angelo "D'Lo" Louis, and features several currently and formerly filmmakers.
