Freeway Revolt

About this campaign

Through personal testimony and historical reflection, this documentary short explores how grassroots activism stopped a proposed highway network in Washington, D.C., and helped reshape the city’s transportation future. The film examines the enduring legacy of urban renewal, displacement, targeted neighborhood destruction, and commuter-driven planning through the stories of movement leaders Sammie Abbott and Reginald Booker. Their children share personal memories of their parents and the people behind the movement, alongside D.C. history experts and a Brookland resident who witnessed the era firsthand.

Freeway Revolt is a fiscally sponsored project of International Documentary Association (EIN: 95-3911227).
