For over 40 years, the Observer Group has published newspapers that belong to the communities they serve — Black-owned, locally rooted, and accountable to no one but you. Across Kern and Los Angeles County, our three papers — the Bakersfield News Observer, the Los Angeles News Observer, and Valley's News Observer — have never stopped telling the stories that go unreported everywhere else.
Today, that mission runs on reporters who actually live here. With the support of Report for America, we've placed local news fellows in our newsrooms — covering our schools, our neighborhoods, our small businesses, and our people, from Bakersfield to Los Angeles to the Valleys.
But this support isn't permanent. Our fellowships are funded for two years. Your donation helps us keep these reporters on the ground past that window — and build toward hiring the next generation of local journalists.
