About this campaign

Las Matadoras is an international feature documentary following female bullfighters across Spain, Mexico and Peru. This documentary show women fighting for their place in one of the world's most physically dangerous and historically male-dominated traditions, at the exact moment that tradition is fighting for its own survival. With Colombia's ban going into effectin 2027, Mexico City mandating bloodless bullfights and states across Latin America banning the practice one by one, the window to tell this story is closing. Las Matadoras captures these women at a pivotal crossroads, where gender equality, colonial legacy, animal rights and cultural survival all collide in the most unlikely of arenas.

Production is already well underway. We have completed six shoots in Spain and conducted 12 virtual in-depth interviews in Peru - including with Milagros Sánchez, the only living female matador in Peru and the inspiration for this film. We are doing the same with the Mexican section (interviewing potential participants online). We have spoken with matadoras, ganaderas, promoters and animal rights activists.

The film is being developed for the international festival circuit and major streaming platforms including Netflix Latin America, BBC and ARTE. Your contribution, which is tax-deductible through Brooklyn Filmshop Inc via Mazlo, directly funds travel, filming and post-production, helping us complete a story that has never been told, about women who have never been seen.

Las Matadoras is a fiscally sponsored project of Brooklyn Filmshop Inc (EIN: 27-2599261).
