Liberation Football is an observational documentary about the Autonomous Football League (AFL), a grassroots soccer community in New York City where immigrants, asylum seekers, longtime residents, and newcomers come together through sport, mutual aid, and friendship.
What began as a low-cost community league has grown a place where people build support networks, celebrate different cultures, organize around shared challenges, and find belonging in one of the world's busiest cities.
This summer, our small production team is documenting the league's players, organizers, and volunteers through interviews and immersive footage captured on and off the field. Our goal is to create a powerful short documentary that will help tell AFL's story, support the league's continued growth, and lay the foundation for a longer-form film.
We're raising $8,000–10,000 to cover the essential costs of principal production, including a small camera and sound crew, transportation, meals, translation support, and post-production. Our team already owns most of the equipment needed, allowing every contribution to go directly toward making production possible.
