Born Gladys Mae Sellers in 1889, Madame Goldye Steiner was a trailblazer. Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Madame Goldye was a part of the golden age of khazones, or the art of Jewish cantorial prayer signing. She mesmerized diverse audiences across the USA at a time when doing so as a Black woman meant overcoming great obstacles.
Edot has incubated work, along with the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum, to identify Gladys's unmarked grave in Milwaukee, and to purchase a marker for her final resting place. In addition to online and in-person events to dedicate the marker in spring and summer of 2024, Milwaukee's Bronzeville Arts Ensemble has assembled a team of trailblazing Black female creatives from the 21st century to undertake the task of retelling Madame Goldye's story using the power of musical theater.
We are working to "rematriate" Madame Goldye's narrative, reintegrating her story into the fabric of Milwaukee's Black history, Milwaukee's Jewish history, and the city's thriving contemporary Black arts community. Simultaneously, the project is forging meaningful connections in cities where Madame Goldye Steiner performed throughout her fascinating career.
