American Canyon is Napa County’s second-largest city, but it lacks the consistent, dedicated news coverage a community of its size deserves.
The Napa Valley Register is working to change that.
Our newsroom has already increased its reporting in American Canyon. With community support, we can attend more public meetings, cover more schools and neighborhood issues, investigate consequential decisions and tell more stories about the people shaping the city.
Our goal is to raise $46,500 by Oct. 31 to support a full year of expanded American Canyon journalism and community engagement.
That goal includes anticipated credit-card processing costs. After those costs, we expect approximately $45,000 to be available for reporting, photography, community engagement and production of the journalism itself.
If we reach our goal, we plan to create a regularly published American Canyon section inside the Napa Valley Register, similar to our Business section. It will provide a dedicated home for coverage of city government, schools, public safety, transportation, local businesses, community organizations and everyday life in American Canyon.
This would not yet be the return of the American Canyon Eagle as a standalone newspaper. But it would restore something meaningful: regular, identifiable American Canyon journalism in print and online — and build a foundation upon which the Eagle could someday rise again.
Contributions will support:
* Additional reporting and photography
* Coverage of public meetings, schools and community events
* Public-records requests and deeper reporting projects
* Community listening sessions and other public engagement
* Editing, design and production of a dedicated American Canyon section
Report Local, our nonprofit fiscal sponsor, does not charge fiscal-sponsorship or administrative fees. Online donations are subject only to standard card-processing costs. Aside from those transaction costs, money raised through this campaign will support expanded American Canyon coverage and community engagement.
Through Report Local, contributions to the Register Media Fund are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Donors have no role in assigning, reporting or editing our journalism. A contribution does not purchase favorable coverage or influence what we investigate, whom we interview or what our stories say. All editorial decisions remain solely with the newsroom.
We will report publicly on the campaign’s progress, the journalism it supports and our plans for sustaining the coverage beyond the first year.
The Register Media Fund supports independent, public-service journalism throughout Napa County. We are launching it with American Canyon because it represents one of the county’s clearest unmet journalism needs.
That said, is there a community or type of journalism you especially hope the Register will strengthen? Please let us know in the optional notes field in the donation form or reach out to us directly. We welcome your input, although all coverage decisions remain with the newsroom.
Your contribution will help American Canyon residents follow consequential public decisions, see their community reflected in local news and hold the people and institutions shaping their city accountable.
Together, we can build a durable new home for American Canyon journalism.
