Overture is a short documentary I’ve been filming over the course of a pivotal year in the life and work of artist Mark Thomas Gibson.
The film follows Mark as he prepares for a major museum exhibition while navigating questions of history, race, family, identity, and what it means to make art in a deeply divided America. His work is bold, urgent, and deeply tied to the past, but what has stayed with me most is the person behind it: an artist, father, teacher, and thinker trying to make sense of the world in real time.
I started this project because I believed there was something powerful in watching Mark work through this moment. Over time, the film has grown into something much more personal and layered than I could have imagined. It is about art, but it is also about legacy, memory, responsibility, and the stories we inherit.
We have already filmed the majority of the documentary, and now we are raising funds to bring Overture through its final stage of post-production. Your support will go directly toward editing, sound design and mix, color correction, music, finishing, festival submissions, and the final technical deliverables needed to share the film with audiences.
Independent documentaries take time, care, and community. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps move this film closer to completion and allows us to give Mark’s story the attention and craft it deserves.
Thank you for helping us bring Overture to life. Your support means a great deal.
