About this campaign

After more than a year of filming, we’re ready to share information about Shooting the Messenger with a trusted circle of friends and advocates. We’re seeking support to finish and release the film.

For decades, Palestine has been reduced to a single, dehumanised narrative – at best, one of helpless victimhood and at worst, of terrorism, “barbarism” and “human animals.” Shooting the Messenger turns that narrative inside-out by letting Gaza speak for itself.

The film collapses the macro and pulls you into the texture of everyday life under Israel’s blockade. What does a raid smell like? How do students continue to learn while bombs rain down on them? Can you pursue your dreams, crack jokes, care for your family, and dance on the beach when drones buzz overhead? These details make clear what is at stake as the occupation tries to erase a people: ordinary, incandescent life.

Told by Gazans and for the world, the documentary follows six intertwined young lives: Journalists Ebrahem and Zaher capture their own stories and those of Civil Defense worker Nooh, aid worker Menna, and medical students Razan and Eman. Each participant has risked their life to share their story. We stay with them through unimaginable loss – such as destroyed homes, displacement and killed family and friends – as well as small, defiant joys – like the birth of new kittens or the taste of chicken for the first time in seven months.

For us, Jehane Noujaim (The Square, Oscar-nominated) and Yousef D. Hammash (multi-award winning producer and director raised in Gaza’s Jabalia Camp), this project is deeply personal. We have lost too many colleagues, homes, friends, and neighbors.
