What is postvention?
Postvention is the support provided to people after someone dies by suicide or overdose. It connects people with information, resources, community support, and professional care when needed.
The need is undisputed.
Each year, approximately 120,000 Americans die by suicide or drug overdose.
Research estimates that approximately 135 people know each person who dies by suicide. An estimated 82.7 million American adults have lost someone they knew to a drug overdose.
Too often, people affected by these losses aren't offered support unless they seek it out. Stigma, shame, financial barriers, and geography can make finding help even harder.
Why I started The Postvention Project
After losing my sister to suicide, I wasn’t offered resources but found support through personal connections. Conversations with dozens of other survivors have shown me how often finding help depends on knowing where to look or whom to ask.
Support shouldn't depend on who you know or where you live.
That's why I started The Postvention Project: to work with communities and organizations to make it easier for people affected by suicide or overdose loss to find and receive the support they need.
