PECAN Project is a community-rooted cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and reimagining rural Black life in Deep East Texas through storytelling, archival practice, genealogy, performance, public programming and community gathering.
Our work exists at the intersection of memory, folklore, land and cultural preservation. Through dinners, teach-ins, oral history projects, artist collaborations and intergenerational gatherings, we create spaces where Black histories and futures can be held with care.
Deep East Texas is historically one of the Blackest regions in the state, shaped by generations of Black land ownership, freedom colonies, migration, folklore and kinship. Yet many of these stories remain under-documented, underfunded and at risk of disappearing. PECAN Project exists to help preserve those histories while also creating new opportunities for imagination, creativity and connection.
Your donation directly supports:
We believe cultural preservation is community care.
We believe rural Black stories deserve visibility, investment and protection.
And we believe imagination is a tool for survival.
By supporting PECAN Project, you are helping us preserve histories that might otherwise be lost while creating intentional spaces for Black communities to gather, dream and build together.
Thank you for believing in this work.
Peace, love and collard greens,
PECAN Project
