Hi!
My name is Avani and I'm an actor and filmmaker in Los Angeles! I'm making a documentary about a group of South Asian Seniors in the suburbs of New Jersey, who join various social clubs to stay active and foster friendships in their later years. A story about how friendship, community, and laughter can be the key to living a long and healthy life.
“In the quiet suburbs of New Jersey, an older generation stays loud with laughter, purpose, and community- reimagining life’s later years and refusing to slow down.”
I was inspired to create this after talking with my family members, Prem & Shashi (I call Manu Nana and Shashi Nani) who are in their 80's and part of 15 clubs in this community- one of them being the "Indo American Community Club". Growing up around the older generation in my family, I have a special appreciation for their stories, wisdom, and the way they cherish community. It became clear that this was a story I needed to tell.
The film follows two senior couples as they reflect on their immigrant journeys from India to the United States. Through intimate moments within their community—joyful pickleball games, outdoor picnics, heartfelt conversations, and enduring friendships—we see how they support and uplift one another while navigating the realities of growing older together. In this close-knit community, loneliness finds little room to exist.
I'm working with a production company, Nina Films, as well as co-directing this project and looking to you, my community, for support! My budget for this film is $100,000 which will cover the costs for the entire project, from production to post production. That includes fees for my creative team, director of photography, lighting, sound, set crew, location fees, and all of the above. We will have a 5-day shoot in New Jersey, from June 21st-25th!
My goal is to raise a minimum of $50,000 by the end of May to cover production costs, then I can raise the remaining afterwards. I've partnered with E2AC: Entertainment 2 Affect Change which is a 501(c)(3) to make your donations tax-deductible.
I'm really excited about uplifting South Asian stories. It is starting off as a short film, and will possibly be made into a feature film later on! I hope it inspires young people to find community (something we're desperately lacking!), and it encourages other seniors around the country to start their own Friendship Club!
As I look to my own community support, any amount given is greatly appreciated!!
