To do all this takes skilled reporters and editors, but the funding model has shifted to support their work. No longer can a newspaper rely mostly on advertising to fund a newsroom. It takes subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth was selected by Report for America, a national nonprofit, to receive a funding grant that helps expand our newsroom.Gerard Edic joined our newsroom in 2025 to cover stories of public safety in Greenwood. The grant from Report for America covers a third of Gerard's salary in the second year. We are asking our community to help fund the rest of his position, just as it did in the first year.
