ABOUT THE FUND
The Hibiscus Rose Therapy Fund is a gender & racial justice project whose mission is to increase positive mental health outcomes for Black queer and trans folks in the Philadelphia Metro Area, surrounding counties, and New Jersey by lowering the financial barriers to gender-affirming mental health care access. To achieve this mission, the project strives to offset the cost of therapeutic care for Black queer and trans individuals who have very limited income by providing financial support towards accessing free gender-affirming surgery and hormone assessments, as well as maintaining initiatives which provide access to low-cost or pro-bono ongoing therapy services. The project also aims to strengthen the infrastructure of care for Black LGBTQ+ community members through providing gender-affirming care training and education to local clinicians in order to increase the number of qualified healthcare professionals equipped and readily available to administer gender-affirming surgery assessments.
As a growing initiative, the Hibiscus Rose Therapy Fund continues to focus on increasing access to life-saving trans-affirming mental health care for Black queer +/ trans folks in the Philadelphia Metro and surrounding areas through addressing financial barriers and cultivating a community of competent providers, and providing continuing education:
- The Free Letter Writing Project: Providing mini-grants and hosting pop-up Community Letter Writing Clinics to help Black queer +/ trans folks access live-saving gender-affirming surgery and hormone assessments from providers in the local community at no cost to them.
- The Therapy Access Project: Providing crisis grants and six-month scholarships to help Black queer +/trans folks pay for therapy, in partnership with Contributing Providers and Community Partners.
- The Trans Care Community Training Project: Creating free training opportunities in the provider community with the focus of increasing the number of mental health providers available nationally to provide gender-affirming surgery and hormone assessments.
